Mayer leads fight to eliminate perk for Board Members

At its September meeting, the Peoria County Board voted unanimously to eliminate subsidized county health insurance for County Board members at the end of the year.

Allen Mayer led the fight against a proposed amendment to continue the subsidized health insurance through the end of the terms of current board members - up to three additional years. The amendment failed on a 10-6 vote.

Mayer mocked the idea that Board Members would sue to maintain the perk.  "I'd love to see a suit brought against us for denying health care benefits to board members," he said. "I don't believe any County Board member is going to sue to health insurance, but if they do, that's a fight I want to take to the people."

Elimination of the perk is expect to save over $24,000 per year based on previous participation in the county's health plan.
